Over the past six months, I’ve had the opportunity to test-drive 40 cars for AsiaOne—a substantial number when you think about it. While some of these reviews have already been featured on our Lifestyle pages, others will be published in the weeks ahead.
The variety of cars I drove ranged from compact hatchbacks and large SUVs to family sedans and even a couple of sports cars. Notably, more than half (25 out of the 40) were fully electric vehicles (EVs), reflecting the rapid growth of EV adoption in Singapore.
When people ask me about my favorite car, it’s always a challenge to pick just one. However, here are a few standout models that left a lasting impression this year:
Most Fun to Drive: Smart #1 Brabus
Who would have thought an electric crossover could be the most fun-to-drive car of the year? The Smart #1 Brabus proves how far EV technology has come, offering an eager, playful driving experience akin to a hyperactive bunny on a sugar rush. While it has a few quirks—like a less-than-ideal interior layout and a hefty price tag—the sheer enjoyment it delivers easily overshadows its flaws.
Most Full of Surprises: MG 4
Many detuned EVs aimed at qualifying for the more affordable Category A Certificate of Entitlement (COE) tend to lose their appeal compared to their higher-powered versions. However, the MG 4 defies this trend. Despite reduced power, it retains its engaging, smooth performance and delivers a driving experience more reminiscent of a sports car than a budget hatchback. It’s proof that well-balanced design can outshine raw power.
Most Attention-Grabbing: MG Cyberster
With its dramatic two-door roadster design and Lamborghini-style upward-opening doors, the MG Cyberster is an undeniable head-turner. It’s not just about looks, though—its 536hp and 725Nm torque allow it to accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in just 3.2 seconds. However, the Cyberster is more about basking in the attention it commands than showcasing its speed.
Best Daily EV: BYD Seal
If I were to choose an EV to drive daily, the BYD Seal would be my pick. It offers a great balance of performance, comfort, and features. The Performance variant is particularly impressive, combining practicality with exhilarating capability. While the Hyundai Ioniq 6 came close, the Seal edged it out, at least for now.
Best Non-EV Daily Driver: Suzuki Swift
For a traditional internal combustion car, the Suzuki Swift stands out. Its simplicity, efficiency, and easy maneuverability make it a delightful option. With straightforward controls, zippy performance, and impressive fuel economy, the Swift combines old-school charm with modern practicality.
The Car I Wanted More Time With: Toyota Camry
Although I only had the latest Toyota Camry for a single night, it left a strong impression. Breaking away from its traditionally safe and somewhat uninspiring image, the new Camry is unexpectedly sporty and luxurious, making it a car I wished I could have driven longer.
Personal Favorite: Mini Cooper E
The electrified Mini Cooper may not be perfect—it has limited range, cramped rear seats, and a stiff ride—but it excels in evoking emotion. Its lively, go-kart-like driving dynamics and nostalgic charm make it an irresistible choice for me. Driving the Mini always feels special, and that emotional connection makes it my top pick of the year. These cars showcase the diversity and excitement in today’s automotive market, especially as electrification continues to gain momentum.
