Hugh Grant has strongly criticized "pathetic" schools and called for a ban on laptops and tablets in classrooms. The actor, a father of five, joined the Close Screens, Open Minds campaign at an event at a west London school, where he shared his frustrations alongside social psychologist Dr. Jonathan Haidt and actress Sophie Winkleman.

Grant described himself as "another angry parent" dealing with children who are constantly glued to screens. He particularly expressed his displeasure when a school proudly announced that every student was given a Chromebook for lessons and homework. He said, "That is the last thing they need, and the last thing we need." Dr. Haidt, who is advocating for phone-free schools, questioned whether the rise in technology in classrooms could be linked to a decline in test scores. He pointed out that after 2012, when tablets and Chromebooks were introduced, test scores began to drop significantly.

Grant, who has children aged six to 15, remarked that parents are often hesitant to challenge the system. He believes politicians only take action when it aligns with their career interests, such as winning votes. He suggested that parents, once united in their opposition to excessive use of technology in schools, could force both politicians and schools to take action, as they fear losing support and students.

He also criticized the "ridiculous posh private schools" his children attend for limiting outdoor play, saying it was absurd that these schools kept kids from playing outside due to rain or wind. He argued that there is an opportunity for a "hero school" to break the traditional mold and offer a more balanced approach.
