Delhi Police has registered an FIR against Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra over allegations of assaulting police personnel and obstructing officials from carrying out their duties during a protest in the national capital, police sources said on Thursday. The case also names several other Congress leaders and party workers who participated in Wednesday’s demonstration. Police said they are investigating the incidents and assessing the alleged involvement of those named in the FIR.

According to police, 91 people were detained during the protest, including several MPs and political leaders. Rahul Gandhi led INDIA bloc leaders in a street demonstration before being detained along with other lawmakers. The confrontation occurred after protesters, travelling by bus following a lunch meeting at a South Indian vegetarian restaurant on Janpath, were stopped by police while allegedly heading towards Jantar Mantar for a surprise sit-in.

The protest later turned into a tense face-off between demonstrators and police. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and several other women leaders sat and lay on the road holding copies of the Constitution before they were removed by police and taken into buses. Opposition leaders were raising slogans demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The protesters included MPs from the Congress, Trinamool Congress, CPI(M), CPI, RJD, IUML and other opposition parties.
