Two police officers assigned to protect polio vaccination workers have been shot dead in Pakistan’s northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, highlighting the continuing threats facing the country's public health campaigns. The attack took place on Tuesday, November 3, in Mohmand district, where motorcycle-borne gunmen ambushed a police vehicle travelling towards Yakh Dand village to provide security for vaccination teams. A third police officer was injured in the shooting, while the attackers escaped. According to police officials, no vaccination workers were inside the vehicle when the attack occurred. No militant organisation immediately claimed responsibility, although the Pakistani Taliban (TTP) and affiliated groups have previously targeted polio vaccination campaigns.

Four Polio Workers Abducted in Separate Incident

In another security incident in Tank district, suspected militants abducted four polio vaccination workers at gunpoint and took them to an undisclosed location.

Local authorities launched search operations to locate the missing workers and secure their release. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi condemned the incidents and called for coordinated efforts to protect frontline health personnel.

Pakistan's Polio Eradication Efforts Face Repeated Setbacks

The attacks occurred during a nationwide vaccination campaign launched on November 2, targeting approximately 24 million children across 97 high-risk districts. Pakistan continues to struggle with polio eradication, with eight cases reported in 2026 so far. Six cases were recorded in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and two in Sindh. Pakistan and neighbouring Afghanistan remain the world's only countries where wild poliovirus is endemic, according to the World Health Organization.

Militant groups have repeatedly spread false claims that vaccination programmes are part of a Western conspiracy to sterilise children. Such propaganda has contributed to attacks against healthcare workers and the police personnel protecting them.

Security and Public Health Concerns Grow

The latest killings expose the difficulties Pakistan faces in protecting essential public health operations in areas affected by militancy. Repeated attacks, kidnappings and threats have placed vaccination workers at risk and complicated efforts to reach vulnerable children. The deaths of the two officers and the abduction of four health workers raise serious questions about the safety of vaccination teams and the ability of authorities to protect critical healthcare programmes. Unless security improves, Pakistan's efforts to eliminate polio will continue to face significant obstacles, leaving millions of children vulnerable to a preventable disease.
