New Delhi: The political battle over national security and foreign policy intensified on the first anniversary of the 2025 Pahalgam terror attack, as the Congress party launched a sharp attack on the Narendra Modi-led government, accusing it of diplomatic failure.

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said the anniversary of the attack remains a day of “pain and anguish” for the country, while also questioning the Centre’s handling of foreign policy in the aftermath of the tragedy. He alleged that despite being labelled a “failed state,” Pakistan has regained global relevance — a development he described as a reflection of the “complete failure” of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s foreign policy.

Congress raises multiple concerns

The opposition party pointed to what it called an intelligence failure linked to the attack and questioned what corrective steps were taken after the admission. It also recalled the bravery of a local civilian who lost his life while trying to save tourists during the incident.

Ramesh further argued that while Pakistan continues to face internal instability and economic challenges, it has nonetheless managed to improve its international standing — something he attributed to shortcomings in India’s diplomatic strategy.

Context: The Pahalgam attack

The remarks come as India marks one year since the deadly terror strike in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam, where 26 civilians, mostly tourists, were killed by militants linked to Pakistan-based groups.

The attack triggered strong retaliation from India in the form of Operation Sindoor, targeting terror infrastructure across the border and significantly escalating tensions between the two countries.

Political divide sharpens

While the government has consistently defended its response and reiterated a zero-tolerance policy on terrorism, the Congress criticism highlights a widening political divide over national security and foreign policy.

The anniversary has seen both remembrance and renewed political confrontation, with the opposition pressing for accountability and a reassessment of India’s diplomatic approach, even as the government emphasizes strong action against terrorism.
