A fresh diplomatic row has emerged over the scope of the recently announced US-Iran ceasefire, with Pakistan, Washington, and Tehran offering conflicting interpretations—particularly on whether Lebanon is covered under the truce. The two-week ceasefire, brokered with Pakistan’s mediation, was intended to ease escalating tensions in West Asia and pave the way for broader peace talks. However, ambiguity over its terms has quickly led to disagreements among key stakeholders.

Pakistan has maintained that the ceasefire applies universally, including Lebanon, suggesting that all hostilities in the region should halt. This position aligns with Iran’s view, which has also insisted that the agreement extends to Israeli military operations in Lebanon. In contrast, the United States has firmly rejected this interpretation. Officials in Washington clarified that the ceasefire is limited strictly to US-Iran hostilities and does not restrict Israel’s actions against Hezbollah in Lebanon.  Israel has echoed the US stance, continuing its military campaign in Lebanon despite the truce. Israeli leadership has emphasized that operations against Hezbollah remain outside the scope of the agreement, highlighting a major gap in understanding among the parties involved.

The confusion has already had serious consequences on the ground. Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon have intensified even after the ceasefire announcement, resulting in significant casualties and raising concerns about the agreement’s effectiveness. The disagreement underscores the fragile nature of the ceasefire and the challenges facing upcoming negotiations. With each side holding a different interpretation, the risk of further escalation remains high, potentially undermining diplomatic efforts aimed at stabilizing the region.
