A young CBI prosecutor, Sheikh Adil Nabi, lost his life in a tragic road accident on the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway near Banihal in Ramban district on Thursday. According to police, the accident occurred when a speeding Mahindra Scorpio rammed into his Alto car, causing severe injuries that later proved fatal.

Officials said the collision took place in the afternoon near the Banihal railway crossing. CCTV footage of the incident has gone viral on social media, showing the Scorpio hitting Adil’s vehicle from behind at high speed. The 35-year-old lawyer was immediately rushed to the Sub-District Hospital Banihal, then referred to GMC Anantnag, and later to SKIMS Soura in Srinagar, where he succumbed to his injuries early Friday morning.

Adil, a resident of Bijbehara in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district, had recently joined the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in Chandigarh after clearing the UPSC examination. His sudden demise has left the legal fraternity and his hometown in deep shock. Ramban SSP Arun Gupta confirmed that the Scorpio driver, identified as Mohammad Shafi, has been arrested and the vehicle seized. “A case has been registered, and investigation into the circumstances leading to the accident is underway,” the officer said.

Tributes have poured in from lawyers, colleagues, and residents across Jammu and Kashmir, remembering Adil as a dedicated and humble professional who had just begun a promising career in public service. The Jammu–Srinagar highway—part of the crucial NH44 route—has long been considered one of the most accident-prone stretches in the region due to speeding, reckless driving, and poor road discipline. Authorities have once again urged motorists to exercise caution, especially in densely curved sections near Banihal and Ramban.
