In a major escalation of the long-running insurgency in Balochistan, militants from the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) carried out their first-ever maritime attack, targeting a Pakistan Coast Guard patrol boat near the Iran border and killing three personnel.

According to security officials, the attack took place in the Arabian Sea during a routine patrol mission. Armed militants opened fire on the vessel, resulting in the deaths of all three Coast Guard members onboard. The BLA later claimed responsibility, describing the assault as part of a “new phase” in its operations.

This marks a significant shift in the group’s tactics, as BLA insurgents have historically focused on land-based attacks against security forces, infrastructure, and civilians in Pakistan’s southwestern province of Balochistan. The move to target maritime forces signals an expansion of their operational capabilities and raises concerns about security along the country’s coastline.

The attack occurred near the strategic Gwadar region, a key hub in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), which has frequently been a target of militant activity. Authorities have since heightened security measures in coastal areas to prevent further incidents.

Balochistan, which borders Iran and Afghanistan, has long been affected by separatist violence, with groups like the BLA demanding greater autonomy or independence. The region’s instability has been a persistent challenge for Pakistan, with periodic spikes in violence targeting both security personnel and economic assets.

The latest attack underscores the evolving nature of the insurgency and the increasing risks to Pakistan’s maritime security. Analysts warn that this development could complicate efforts to stabilise the region, particularly given its strategic importance for trade, energy routes, and international investment.

As security forces intensify operations in response, the incident highlights the growing complexity of the conflict and the challenges facing Pakistan in containing insurgent threats across both land and sea.
