Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin has accused the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus of effectively placing him under house arrest for nearly 18 months, restricting his movements and preventing him from travelling abroad even for medical treatment.  In an interview with a Bangladeshi newspaper, Shahabuddin said he was confined to the presidential residence, Bangabhaban, and described the situation as deeply humiliating and mentally distressing. He claimed that the restrictions disrupted longstanding presidential traditions, including attending Eid prayers at the National Eidgah, a practice observed by Bangladesh’s presidents since independence.

Travel and Medical Treatment Blocked

The president said he was not permitted to leave the country for essential medical follow-ups after undergoing bypass surgery in Singapore. Despite formally requesting permission to travel for treatment, authorities allegedly denied his request and instead suggested bringing foreign doctors to Bangladesh. Shahabuddin also stated that he was prevented from attending another medical appointment in London, further intensifying his frustration with the restrictions imposed by the interim administration.

Allegations of Political Pressure

The president alleged that the interim leadership deliberately sidelined him and attempted to pressure him into resigning. He claimed the objective was to weaken him mentally and create an opportunity to appoint a preferred replacement, potentially allowing the administration to consolidate power and delay democratic processes.  He added that the experience left him feeling marginalised and humiliated, which led to earlier reports suggesting he was considering stepping down. However, he clarified that he does not intend to resign voluntarily and plans to complete his term, which runs until 2028.

Background to Political Turmoil

Muhammad Yunus assumed leadership of the interim administration in August 2024 after widespread protests led to the removal of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The political transition triggered a period of uncertainty and institutional tensions within Bangladesh’s leadership. Shahabuddin said that the pressure and restrictions he faced were part of broader efforts by the interim government to diminish the authority of the presidency during a critical political transition.

Continuing Political Fallout

The president’s allegations have added a new dimension to Bangladesh’s political landscape, highlighting internal divisions during the interim administration period. His remarks are expected to intensify political debate and scrutiny over the actions of the Yunus-led government and its handling of constitutional authority. The controversy underscores ongoing tensions within Bangladesh’s political system as the country navigates its post-transition phase and seeks to restore institutional stability.
