Bangladesh Mob Lynching: Hindu Man Amrit Mondal Beaten to Death Over Alleged Extortion

In another incident of mob violence, a 29-year-old Hindu man named Amrit Mondal was beaten to death by residents in Bangladesh’s Rajbari district on Tuesday night. Police said the attack took place after allegations emerged that Mondal, along with his associates, was attempting to extort money from locals.
According to Rajbari police, Mondal — also known as Samrat — and members of his group Samrat Bahini arrived at a house in Hosendanga village of Pangsha Upazila late at night, demanding cash from a resident. When the household raised an alarm, villagers surrounded the group. Mondal’s associates reportedly fled the scene, leaving him behind. He was caught and assaulted by the mob.
Officers from Pangsha Police Station reached the site and rushed him to a nearby health complex, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. His body was later sent for postmortem examination. Police said Mondal was a known criminal, facing at least two cases including murder. A man identified as Mohammad Selim has been detained with a foreign pistol and pipe gun in connection with the case.
The interim government headed by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus condemned the killing but dismissed claims of a communal motive. “It appears to be linked to extortion and criminal activity, not religion,” a government spokesperson told reporters, adding that those involved in mob violence would face legal action. The incident comes just days after another Hindu man, Dipu Chandra Das, was lynched in Mymensingh over alleged blasphemy. Authorities have urged calm amid fears of rising violence and misinformation on social media.
Rights activists have expressed concern over the growing pattern of mob justice across Bangladesh. Hindu minorities, who make up around 8 percent of the population, have often found themselves vulnerable amid shifting political tensions. Police have heightened patrols in Rajbari and nearby districts as investigations continue.
