Bangladesh's High Commissioner to India, M. Reaz Hamidullah, arrived in Dhaka late Monday night after an urgent summons from his foreign ministry, amid growing strains in relations with New Delhi. Local media outlets like Prothom Alo confirmed the diplomat's sudden return, noting that he is expected to participate in high-level discussions on bilateral challenges.

The recall comes against a backdrop of recent security concerns and violent incidents that have soured ties between the two neighbors. Just weeks earlier, on December 17, India's Ministry of External Affairs had summoned Hamidullah to protest attacks on minorities and threats to its mission in Dhaka, including the killings of youth leader Sharif Osman Hadi and Hindu resident Dipu Chandra Das. These events triggered protests, mutual accusations, and even the suspension of visa services at diplomatic posts, with India rejecting what it views as misleading narratives from Dhaka.

Such rapid diplomatic maneuvers are not uncommon in the history of India-Bangladesh relations, often signaling behind-the-scenes efforts to address border issues, trade disputes, or security risks. With Bangladesh's interim government under Muhammad Yunus preparing for elections by February 2026, the timing raises questions about the future of key shared interests like river water-sharing and border management. Although neither side has issued public statements yet, analysts are monitoring for signs of de-escalation, much like the successful resolution of past crises through agreements such as the 2015 land boundary pact.
