Kangana Ranaut’s upcoming film Emergency, set to release on January 17, 2025, will not be screened in Bangladesh due to ongoing political tensions between the two nations. The film, which explores the life and times of former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, has sparked significant discussion since its trailer launch.
The ban appears to be driven by political considerations rather than the film's content. A source familiar with the matter stated, “The decision to halt the screening of Emergency in Bangladesh is linked to the current strained relations between the two countries.”The film highlights several historical events, including the Emergency declared in India in 1975 by Indira Gandhi, her role in the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War, and the assistance provided to Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, often referred to as the Father of Bangladesh. The narrative also touches upon the assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman by Bangladeshi extremists, which may have contributed to the decision to ban the film.
The movie stars Kangana Ranaut as Indira Gandhi, alongside a prominent cast including Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Ashok Chhabra, Mahima Chaudhry, Milind Soman, Vishak Nair, and the late Satish Kaushik. With Emergency, Kangana aims to overcome a series of box-office disappointments, including her recent film Tejas (2023). This development marks another challenge for the controversial film, which is set against the backdrop of a politically charged narrative and a significant chapter in South Asian history.
