Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday laid the foundation stone for Adani Power’s 3,200 MW ultra-supercritical thermal power plant in Chapar, located in the Dhubri district of lower Assam. The project, estimated to cost ₹48,000 crore, is expected to create around 5,000 jobs and is set to become the largest power generation facility in Northeast India.

The Chapar project forms part of the Adani Group’s planned ₹63,000 crore investment in Assam. According to the company, the power plant will be commissioned in phases, with the first stages expected to begin from December 2030. Adani Group said its investments across different sectors in Assam are expected to cross ₹80,000 crore. Several of these projects have already moved into the execution phase and are expected to support employment, infrastructure development and broader economic activity in the state over the next three to four years.

Speaking at the foundation ceremony, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said Assam was steadily developing into an important energy hub for the Northeast. He described the Chapar power project as a significant outcome of investor confidence generated by the Advantage Assam Investor Summit 2.0. Sarma also said the project and related economic activity would contribute to the state through higher business activity and SGST revenues.

Jeet Adani, Director of the Adani Group, said the Chapar facility would play an important role in meeting the region’s future power requirements. He said the project would support industrial expansion, allow businesses to increase their operations and contribute to the availability of electricity for households.

The proposed thermal power plant will consist of four generating units, each with a capacity of 800 MW, and will use ultra-supercritical technology. Of the Adani Group’s ₹63,000 crore investment planned for Assam, ₹48,000 crore has been earmarked for the Chapar power project, while another ₹15,000 crore will be invested in two pumped-storage projects with a combined capacity of 2,700 MW.
