Assam CM Himanta said Pakistan is trying to influence the Assembly polls and claimed Congress is finished in the state.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday declared that the Congress has no future in the state, while repeating his claims of Pakistani involvement in the ongoing passport controversy linked to Congress leaders Gaurav Gogoi and Pawan Khera over allegations concerning his wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sharma.
At a press briefing, Sarma said Congress is losing ground in Assam, citing betting market trends that showed rising support for the NDA after the issue surfaced. He also accused Congress of targeting leaders unfairly, drawing parallels with past political incidents. Intensifying his criticism, Sarma questioned Gogoi and Khera over alleged foreign connections, asking why a Pakistani social media group was involved. He maintained that Pakistan has been attempting to influence Assam’s elections, a concern he said he had raised earlier.
The Chief Minister claimed he had prior indications of the developments and called the matter a serious offense against the country. He confirmed that a police complaint had been filed against Khera and others, and that the central government had been informed. Sarma also alleged that the documents used by Congress leaders were manipulated using AI tools and sourced from Pakistani platforms. He dismissed claims about overseas business links, stating that company registrations abroad are easy to obtain.
During the briefing, he presented details highlighting inconsistencies in the allegations, including reverse image searches that he said disproved the claims. The controversy began after Khera accused Sarma’s wife of holding multiple passports and undisclosed foreign business interests, which Sarma denied, adding that at least one passport cited had already been deemed fake. The dispute continues to escalate, with both sides exchanging accusations ahead of Assam’s single-phase Assembly elections on April 9, with vote counting scheduled for May 4.
