Andhra Pradesh: PM Modi inaugurates Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport at Bhogapuram

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated the Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport at Bhogapuram in Andhra Pradesh, marking a major milestone for the state's aviation infrastructure. During his visit, the Prime Minister is also set to dedicate development projects worth more than ₹17,900 crore to the nation, aimed at boosting connectivity and economic growth in the region.

PM Modi was welcomed by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan upon his arrival in Bhogapuram, located in Vizianagaram district. The Prime Minister is scheduled to visit Mysuru, Karnataka, where he will inaugurate the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Youth Centre (Viveka Smaraka) at the Sri Ramakrishna Ashrama and address a public gathering.

According to the Prime Minister's Office (PMO), the newly inaugurated Greenfield airport has been developed under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model at an estimated cost of over ₹5,640 crore. The facility has been designed to accommodate around six million passengers annually, offering modern infrastructure and a smooth travel experience.

The airport features advanced digital technologies, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), Building Information Modelling (BIM), Airside 4.0 systems, an Airport Predictive Operations Centre (APOC), biometric passenger processing, automated baggage handling, and intelligent monitoring solutions. These innovations are expected to improve operational efficiency, passenger safety, and overall airport management.

Sustainability has also been a key focus in the airport's design. The project includes a 5 MW solar power plant, energy-efficient HVAC and lighting systems, rainwater harvesting, electric vehicle charging stations, smart building management, waste management initiatives, and environmental monitoring systems. The passenger terminal has been developed in line with Green Building Standards and is registered with the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).

The airport reflects Andhra Pradesh's cultural identity. Its terminal roof has been inspired by the traditional Chuttilu houses and the scenic landscapes of the Araku Valley, while the building's flowing design represents the movement of a flying fish, combining local heritage with contemporary airport architecture. The PMO said the new airport is expected to significantly improve air connectivity, encourage tourism, attract investment, facilitate trade, and create new employment opportunities, making it a key driver of economic development in Andhra Pradesh.
