Amritsar Police Arrest Five in ASI Jaswant Singh Firing Case; Pakistan-Based Link Under Probe

Amritsar Rural Police have arrested five people in connection with the firing case involving Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Jaswant Singh. Investigators are also probing a suspected link to a Pakistan-based handler as part of the wider investigation. Police said the incident took place when ASI Jaswant Singh was allegedly targeted while returning home. The investigation subsequently led officers to several suspects believed to have been involved in the attack.

According to officials, police teams traced the suspects and launched an operation to apprehend them. During the investigation, one of the accused, identified as Karanveer Nandi, was injured in an exchange of fire with police. He was taken to Civil Hospital in Jandiala but later died from his injuries. A police constable was also injured during the operation. Police said a bullet struck another officer’s bulletproof jacket during the encounter, preventing a more serious injury.

Investigators said weapons and ammunition were recovered during the operation, including two pistols and live cartridges. Police are now examining the alleged role of the arrested individuals, including those suspected of providing shelter and assistance to the shooters. Inspector General of Police (Border Range) Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said investigators had found indications of contact between one of the accused and a Pakistan-based handler. Police are examining communication records and other evidence to determine whether the alleged foreign connection played a role in planning or facilitating the attack.

Authorities are also investigating possible overseas links and the recruitment of local individuals. Police suspect that some recruits may have been offered money in exchange for carrying out criminal activities. The investigation is continuing, with police questioning the arrested suspects and working to identify other people who may have been connected to the case. Officials said further arrests could follow as the investigation progresses. Police have so far described the Pakistan-based connection as an investigative lead, and further evidence will be required to establish the full nature of the alleged network.
