Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu's visit to the White House is intended to request leniency on U.S. tariffs, according to an analyst.
On Monday (Apr 7), Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pledged to eliminate Israel's trade surplus with the United States, following President Donald Trump's recent announcement of broad tariffs that shook global markets. Netanyahu became the first foreign leader to meet with Trump in the Oval Office after the tariff measures were introduced. Stephen Zunes, a politics professor and director of Middle Eastern Studies at the University of San Francisco, told CNA’s Asia First that Netanyahu could be seeking some level of flexibility in response to Israel's decision to remove minor duties on U.S. imports. He also discussed potential new agreements related to the Gaza conflict and suggested that Iran might favor indirect talks with the U.S. over pursuing a fresh nuclear deal.
