From K9 Vajra to M77 and ATAGS: Inside India's 155mm Artillery Powerhouse

India is undertaking a major transformation of its artillery capabilities under the Field Artillery Rationalization Plan, with a focus on preparing for high-intensity operations along its challenging borders. The modernization drive is gradually moving away from older towed guns toward more mobile, automated and longer-range systems. Key assets in this shift include the K9 Vajra-T tracked self-propelled howitzer, the domestically developed Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS), and the lightweight M777 howitzer, giving the Army greater flexibility across difficult and high-altitude terrain.
