The Mahayuti alliance is swiftly advancing its efforts to form a new government in Maharashtra. A crucial meeting took place in Delhi on Thursday night between Union Home Minister Amit Shah and alliance leaders. During the discussions, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) reportedly proposed the deputy chief minister post for Eknath Shinde. However, Shinde, who had initially sought to retain his position as chief minister, has shown reluctance to accept this offer, creating a political dilemma for the BJP.
Sources suggest that Eknath Shinde has proposed that the deputy CM post be given to another leader from his Shiv Sena faction. Additionally, he is reportedly considering staying out of the government altogether. The BJP, however, remains unwilling to let Shinde step aside, citing his significance in the new government. Shinde is believed to view the deputy CM role as a significant demotion after serving as chief minister. Furthermore, he has allegedly suggested his son, Shrikant Shinde, for the deputy CM position. This proposal, however, is unlikely to gain BJP approval due to concerns about Shrikant's lack of political experience and the potential accusations of nepotism it could attract.
The BJP also fears that elevating Shrikant Shinde could cause discontent among senior leaders within Shinde’s faction. Many of these leaders may feel sidelined by such a move, potentially leading to internal unrest. Additionally, placing Shrikant alongside seasoned leaders like Ajit Pawar in the government could weaken the image of the Shiv Sena faction due to unfavorable comparisons. Shrikant’s aggressive political style may also create friction within the government, further complicating matters for the BJP.
Eknath Shinde remains a pivotal figure for the BJP in Maharashtra. Over the past year, he has solidified his position as a prominent face of the Maratha community. His associations with influential Maratha leaders, including activist Manoj Jarange Patil, have bolstered his popularity and credibility. The BJP values Shinde’s standing among the Maratha community, viewing his involvement as an asset to address potential unrest over the contentious Maratha reservation issue. Shinde’s presence in the government is seen as a critical factor in defusing tensions during future protests or agitations.
Another reason for the BJP's insistence on Shinde's continued involvement is the growing influence of Ajit Pawar within the Mahayuti alliance. If Shinde were to step aside, it could significantly enhance Pawar’s authority and control within the government. To maintain a balance of power, the BJP seeks to have two strong Maratha leaders in prominent roles. Keeping Shinde involved would serve as a counterbalance to Pawar’s influence, ensuring unity and stability within the Mahayuti government. This strategic positioning is crucial for the BJP as it navigates the complex dynamics of the alliance.
