Congress Deputy Leader in the Lok Sabha, Gaurav Gogoi, has appealed to Speaker Om Birla to address the party's complaint regarding BJP MP Nishikant Dubey's "defamatory remarks" against Rahul Gandhi and expunge them from the parliamentary record.
Gogoi emphasized that, following the Speaker's decision, the Congress is ready to actively participate in the legislative agenda for the ongoing Winter Session of Parliament.
Sharing the letter on X, Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh stated that Gogoi reaffirmed the party's dedication to ensuring the smooth functioning of Parliament. Gogoi also proposed a roadmap to resume proceedings, raising the question of whether the Modi government truly wants both Houses to operate efficiently.
In his letter dated December 10, Gogoi reiterated concerns outlined in earlier communications on December 5 and 6, 2024, about Dubey's comments during the Zero Hour Session on December 5, which targeted Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. He urged the Speaker to investigate the complaint and expunge all defamatory and unparliamentary remarks.
Referring to the incident, Congress had previously criticized Dubey for linking Rahul Gandhi to a foreign investor, calling it part of a deliberate attempt by "agents of Adani" to malign those who expose alleged corruption. Gogoi remarked that Dubey’s comments often surface when Rahul Gandhi speaks out against Adani, likening BJP MPs to "sleeper cells of Adani" within Parliament.
Dubey's remarks, which accused the Congress and investigative platforms of collaborating with a US-based billionaire to undermine India’s progress under Prime Minister Modi, sparked uproar in the Lok Sabha and led to adjournment of proceedings. He claimed the Congress-led opposition used media reports, timed around Parliament sessions, to disrupt proceedings and derail India’s success story. The Congress has strongly contested these claims, demanding action against Dubey for his comments.
