Meta-owned Instagram reported that its services were restored after thousands of users experienced technical difficulties on Wednesday (Dec 11), as per outage monitoring site Downdetector.com.
The outage began around 12:50 PM ET, with over 100,000 incidents reported on Facebook and nearly 70,000 on Instagram at its peak. By 6:00 PM ET, the number of reports had decreased to over 1,000 for both platforms. Downdetector compiles data based on user-reported issues, so the actual number of affected users could differ.
Some users on Facebook and Instagram shared on X that they encountered an error message stating "something went wrong," while Meta confirmed it was working on a fix.
Earlier this year, a technical glitch caused a widespread outage that affected hundreds of thousands of users on both platforms. In October, another disruption occurred but was largely resolved within an hour.
