HANOI — Eleven people lost their lives in a devastating fire at a three-story cafe in Hanoi late Wednesday night (Dec 18). Authorities have arrested a man suspected of starting the fire, Vietnam's Ministry of Public Security confirmed on Thursday.
According to the police, the suspect, reportedly in his early 50s, admitted to using gasoline to ignite a fire on the ground floor following a heated argument with the cafe staff. The blaze was reported to authorities shortly after 11pm (1600 GMT).
Witnesses described harrowing scenes as the fire rapidly spread, blocking all exits. One witness mentioned the overpowering smell of gasoline, while another reported hearing a loud explosion. Emergency responders managed to rescue seven people from the burning building, two of whom were hospitalized for their injuries.
The tragic incident highlights the potential dangers of fire hazards in crowded spaces, as the flames trapped several victims inside before firefighters could intervene. Investigations are ongoing to determine further details and ensure accountability.
