On Friday, the Congress party condemned the FIR filed against Rahul Gandhi in connection with a scuffle in Parliament, calling it a "diversionary tactic" meant to counter his strong opposition to Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s remarks on BR Ambedkar. Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal took to social media to express that the FIR, filed against Gandhi for defending Babasaheb’s legacy, was a "badge of honour." Venugopal emphasized that this FIR was a response to Gandhi’s firm protest against the Home Minister’s statements, adding that Gandhi is already facing 26 FIRs due to what he described as the BJP’s political vendetta, and that this new FIR would not deter him or the Congress from opposing the casteist agenda of the RSS-BJP regime.
Venugopal also raised concerns over the lack of action on complaints filed by women MPs of the Congress party, questioning why the Delhi Police quickly filed the FIR against Gandhi but failed to act on the FIRs against BJP leaders who allegedly assaulted Congress women MPs.
Meanwhile, on Thursday, the Delhi Police registered an FIR against Rahul Gandhi following the scuffle in Parliament, during which two BJP MPs reportedly got injured. The BJP accused Gandhi of "physical assault and incitement" and sought charges including attempt to murder. BJP MP Hemang Joshi lodged the complaint, supported by BJP leaders Anurag Thakur and Bansuri Swaraj. The FIR included charges under sections for voluntarily causing grievous hurt, endangering safety, use of criminal force, criminal intimidation, and common intention.
The Congress also filed a complaint at the same police station, accusing BJP leaders of misbehaving with Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and seeking charges for assault and battery. The scuffle, which took place near the Makar Dwar entrance, saw both parties blaming each other for the physical confrontation. Two BJP MPs were injured, and a woman MP alleged that Rahul Gandhi intimidated her. The Congress denied these allegations, claiming that BJP MPs blocked Gandhi’s path and pushed Kharge, injuring his knee. The incident occurred as both the NDA and the INDIA alliance staged separate protests over Amit Shah’s comments on BR Ambedkar.
