A global study has revealed that one in three children are now short-sighted, struggling to clearly see distant objects. Myopia, or short-sightedness, is a growing health issue expected to affect millions more children by 2050. The research shows high rates of myopia in countries like Japan (85%) and South Korea (73%), with over 40% of children affected in China and Russia. In contrast, Paraguay and Uganda have some of the lowest rates at around 1%, while the UK,, Ireland, and the US are at approximately 15%.
The study highlights that short-sightedness has tripled from 1990 to 2023, with a notable increase following the Covid pandemic, attributed to more screen time and less outdoor activity.
