MOSCOW — Below are key statements from Russian President Vladimir Putin's annual phone-in and press conference.
On his 25 years in power, Putin stated, "Yes, I believe I've done more than just protect Russia. We’ve steered away from the brink of disaster, as past events almost led us to a total loss of sovereignty. Without sovereignty, Russia cannot stand as an independent state. I've ensured that Russia remains an independent power, capable of making its own decisions, rather than being used by others."
Regarding Syria, Putin explained, "We maintain relations with all groups controlling the situation there and with regional countries. Most of them prefer our military bases to stay in Syria. You portray Syria as a failure for Russia, but it’s not. For those who seek to depict Russia as weakened, let me remind you of a famous writer who said, 'Rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated.' Israel is the main beneficiary of the Syrian situation, in my view. While we hope for Israel's withdrawal, they are reinforcing their presence."
When discussing a potential meeting with Donald Trump, he said, "Well, I don’t know when we’ll meet as he hasn’t mentioned anything. I haven’t spoken to him in over four years. But I’m always ready for a meeting if he desires it. If a meeting happens with the newly elected president, Trump, I’m sure we’ll have a lot to discuss."
On Joe Biden pardoning his son, Putin remarked, "It’s crucial to consider whether one is a politician or a human being. Biden showed he’s more of a human being. I wouldn’t criticize him for that." Regarding how Putin has changed since the war began, he acknowledged, "The past three years have been a severe test for the country and for me. I've started joking less and almost stopped laughing."
On his willingness to negotiate with Ukraine, Putin stated, "We’ve always said we’re open to negotiations and compromises, but the other side, both literally and figuratively, has refused. Soon, those willing to fight in Ukraine will be exhausted, and there won’t be anyone left. We’re ready, but the other side must also be ready for talks and compromises. We don't need a truce, but lasting peace, secured by guarantees for Russia and its citizens."
In response to the ending of the deal with Ukraine on Russian gas transit, Putin clarified, "Ukraine chose not to extend the transit agreement, not us, despite receiving around $700-800 million annually. This contract is now over, and it’s clear. Gazprom will manage."
On Russia's new Oreshnik hypersonic missile, he confidently asserted, "There’s no chance of intercepting these missiles. Let Western experts propose a technological experiment, say a high-tech duel. Let them aim all their defenses at a target like Kyiv, and we’ll strike with Oreshnik to see what happens. We’re ready, but is the other side?"
Discussing the war in Ukraine, Putin said, "The situation on the front is shifting dramatically. We are making progress daily. We are working toward the goals we set at the start of the special military operation. Our soldiers are fighting heroically, both in the Kursk region and along the entire front. Let’s wish them luck, victory, and a safe return home."
Finally, on the economy, Putin remarked, "In Russia, the economy is stable and developing despite external pressures and attempts to influence us. Inflation is an alarming sign. There are challenges, including inflation and an overheated economy, but the government and central bank are addressing this. Some experts believe the central bank could have acted earlier and more effectively to curb inflation without raising the key rate. The rise in prices is unfortunate, but I’m confident that we’ll manage this while maintaining overall economic stability."
