External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar recently unveiled a vision for India’s future under the concept of “Viksit Bharat,” meaning “Developed India,” with the aim of transforming the nation into a developed country by 2047, coinciding with the centenary of India’s independence. He underscored that achieving this ambitious goal requires a dynamic and forward-looking foreign policy that aligns with the aspirations of a modern, advanced India. Jaishankar highlighted the necessity of moving beyond traditional models, particularly the post-independence Nehruvian framework, to craft strategies that respond to contemporary challenges and evolving global dynamics.

He emphasized four critical factors driving this need for change: shifts in domestic development models, the transformation in international relations and the behavior of states, rapid technological advancements shaping global and national capabilities, and the restructured global landscape in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. These changes, he argued, demand a reimagined foreign policy to ensure India’s global influence and secure its strategic interests.

Jaishankar advocated for a foreign policy that builds robust international relationships, minimizes conflicts, and enhances India’s standing as a global power. He introduced the concept of “Vishwa Bandhu,” or universal brotherhood, as a guiding principle for India’s diplomatic engagements, reflecting a vision of peace and cooperation on the global stage. This vision also calls for India to actively engage in global governance, contribute to shaping the international order, and lead efforts in addressing common global challenges.

The “Viksit Bharat” initiative, as outlined by Jaishankar, represents a holistic approach to India’s growth, focusing not only on domestic development but also on strengthening its role and influence in the world. By aligning its diplomatic strategies with national ambitions, India aims to navigate the complexities of international relations more effectively and establish itself as a developed and influential nation by 2047.
