Sunny Deol, who made a spectacular return to the limelight with the enormous success of *Gadar 2* last year, recently shared some personal and insightful reflections about the challenges he and his father, the legendary actor Dharmendra, faced during the 80s and 90s in the film industry. In a revealing interview with *Indian Express Screen*, the National Award-winning actor discussed how major production houses, at the time, were unwilling to collaborate with them. Sunny explained that the harsh reality of the film industry is that it is divided into camps, where loyalty and favoritism play a significant role in determining who gets opportunities. According to Sunny, production houses tend to align themselves with individuals who are part of their inner circles—those who will indulge in sycophantic behavior, known in Hindi as chamchagiri.
This, Sunny pointed out, was a major barrier for him and his father, as both were known for their no-nonsense attitude and refusal to play along with such industry politics. Sunny, a proud Jat, emphasized that he and Dharmendra were always upfront, honest, and unafraid to speak their minds, which often led to friction with those in power in the industry. They did not shy away from standing their ground, regardless of the consequences, which, according to Sunny, is one of the reasons why they were excluded from working with some of the biggest production houses during the latter part of his father’s career and his own early years.
Sunny also acknowledged that his own career faced similar challenges. During the same period, he, too, found himself without support from major production houses. Despite his talent and the success he had already achieved, he was unable to secure the backing of big studios. This prompted him to take matters into his own hands. He decided to venture into film production, aiming to create opportunities for himself and bring new projects to life on his own terms. However, he also acknowledged that the journey to success was not easy, as he had to keep fighting and persevering despite the lack of initial support.
Reflecting on his experience, Sunny stressed the importance of persistence and resilience in the industry. He said that when no one else comes forward to support you, you must keep pushing forward and continue fighting for what you believe in. He emphasized that success in the film industry is often not about who you know or the circles you belong to, but about your talent, determination, and the willingness to keep working hard, even when the odds seem insurmountable. Through this journey, Sunny Deol and his father Dharmendra proved that talent and integrity can pave the way for long-term success, regardless of the industrys challenges and its complicated dynamics.
