A heated controversy unfolded in Parliament when TMC leader Kalyan Banerjee made a contentious remark, referring to Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia as a “lady killer” during a discussion in the Lok Sabha. The comment sparked outrage and led to disruptions in the session, forcing an adjournment until 5 p.m. Banerjee later apologized for his remarks, but Scindia firmly rejected the apology, asserting that personal attacks on any member of Parliament were unacceptable. Scindia emphasized the importance of maintaining dignity and self-respect, warning that anyone resorting to personal insults should be prepared to face a response.
The altercation arose during a debate on amendments to the Disaster Management Act, where Banerjee accused the BJP-led central government of non-cooperation during the COVID-19 pandemic. The remarks escalated tensions, with BJP members criticizing Banerjee’s behavior as unbecoming of a parliamentarian. They highlighted that such comments undermined the sanctity of parliamentary discourse and were particularly inappropriate coming from a representative of a state led by a woman chief minister, referring to West Bengals Mamata Banerjee.
Following the incident, a group of BJP women MPs, including key voices like Daggubati Purandeswari, met Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju to demand strict action against Banerjee. They also approached the Speaker, urging that exemplary punishment be meted out to deter similar behavior in the future and to ensure respect for women in the Parliament. Purandeswari criticized Banerjee for his repeated use of offensive language, emphasizing that his actions were not only disrespectful but also set a poor precedent for parliamentary conduct.
The controversy has reignited debates about the need for maintaining decorum and professionalism in Parliament, with demands for a stronger framework to address personal and offensive remarks. The BJP MPs insisted that taking action against such behavior was essential to preserving the integrity of parliamentary discussions and fostering an environment of mutual respect.
