India and the United Kingdom have entered into a pivotal agreement to advance the Indian Navy’s capabilities through the development of electric propulsion systems for warships. The framework agreement was finalized on November 28, 2024, during the third meeting of the Electric Propulsion Capability Partnership held in Portsmouth, UK.
The pact includes a Statement of Intent (SoI) that outlines a roadmap for the collaborative design, development, and production of Integrated Full Electric Propulsion Systems (IFEPS) for Indian naval vessels. This initiative supports Indias Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) mission by prioritizing indigenous defence technology development. One of the primary goals of this partnership is to integrate electric propulsion systems into the Landing Platform Docks, which are set to be built in Indian shipyards. This step represents a significant leap forward in modernizing India’s naval fleet.
The agreement highlights the growing defence cooperation between India and the UK, emphasizing a mutual commitment to maritime technological advancements and boosting the Indian Navys operational readiness. The pact was signed by Rajeev Prakash, Joint Secretary of Naval Systems for India, and Rear Admiral Steve McCarthy from the UK Ministry of Defence. This collaboration aims to reduce Indias dependence on foreign defence technology while fostering indigenous innovation in naval propulsion. Electric propulsion systems are expected to enhance the Navy’s operational efficiency, fuel savings, stealth capabilities, and environmental sustainability.
With the UK’s extensive expertise in maritime propulsion, this partnership is set to play a transformative role in modernizing Indias naval fleet, strengthening its maritime strategies, and reinforcing shared interests in the Indo-Pacific region.
