The Congress party vehemently criticized the FIR filed against Rahul Gandhi in connection with a scuffle that occurred in Parliament, calling it a deliberate diversionary tactic intended to overshadow his strong opposition to Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s remarks about Dr. BR Ambedkar. Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal took to social media platform ‘X’ to express his views, stating that the FIR against Gandhi, which he described as an attempt to derail the political narrative, was instead a badge of honour for the Congress leader. Venugopal argued that the FIR was a direct response to Gandhi’s firm stance against Shah’s controversial comments about Ambedkar and insisted that the filing of the FIR would not deter either Gandhi or the Congress from standing up to the BJP’s perceived casteist agenda. He pointed out that Gandhi was already facing 26 FIRs, which he claimed were part of a broader political vendetta by the BJP.
In his criticism, Venugopal also raised concerns about the Delhi Polices selective action, questioning why they acted swiftly to file an FIR against Gandhi, but had failed to take similar action on complaints filed by Congress women MPs. These women MPs had accused BJP leaders of physical assault and misconduct, yet no steps were taken by the police, which Venugopal highlighted as a glaring example of bias in favor of the ruling party. He demanded to know why the Delhi Police had failed to address those complaints, suggesting that the BJP was using its influence to shield its leaders from accountability.
The FIR against Rahul Gandhi stemmed from the scuffle that unfolded on Thursday in Parliament, where both BJP and Congress MPs accused each other of physical aggression. The altercation, which occurred near the Makar Dwar entrance, allegedly left two BJP MPs injured. The BJP accused Rahul Gandhi of inciting the altercation and physically assaulting their members, even filing a complaint with the Parliament Street Police Station that sought charges under various sections of the law, including attempted murder and criminal intimidation. In response, the Congress filed its own complaint, alleging that BJP leaders had misbehaved with Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, resulting in charges of assault, grievous hurt, and battery.
The scuffle took place amid protests staged by the NDA (National Democratic Alliance) and the INDIA (Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance) coalition members over Amit Shahs comments regarding Ambedkar. Both parties have used the incident as a platform to criticize each other, with the Congress denying the allegations against Gandhi and instead blaming BJP MPs for blocking Gandhi’s path and pushing Kharge, which led to an injury. The conflict over the issue of Ambedkars legacy has now escalated into a highly charged political confrontation, with the Congress vowing to continue its fight against the government’s policies and what they see as a systemic effort to undermine the values Ambedkar stood for.
