Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has warned that his country could lose the war against Russia if the United States cuts military funding. Speaking to Fox News on Tuesday, Zelensky stressed that while Ukraine continues to fight with its own production capabilities, they are insufficient to secure a victory or ensure survival. The potential reduction in U.S. support, he said, would have devastating consequences.
The remarks come amid skepticism from U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, who has criticized the extensive financial aid provided to Ukraine by President Joe Biden's administration since the Russian invasion began in 2022. Trump has frequently vowed to end the war quickly but has not elaborated on his plans for achieving peace.
This week, Trump’s allies also sharply criticized Biden’s decision to allow Ukraine to use U.S.-supplied long-range missiles for strikes inside Russia, accusing the administration of escalating the conflict. Zelensky, however, emphasized that maintaining unity between Ukraine and the United States is critical for the ongoing war effort.
Zelensky expressed his belief that Trump has the strength to influence Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war. He argued that Putin, while powerful, is ultimately weaker than the United States. The outcome of negotiations and peace settlements, he suggested, largely depends on the role and support of the U.S., particularly as Russia continues to gain ground.
