On Monday, October 21, Qualcomm announced that it is integrating technology originally created for its laptop chips into its mobile phone chips, aiming to enhance their capabilities for generative AI applications.
As the leading seller of mobile phone chips worldwide, Qualcomm has been working to broaden its market since 2021 by hiring former Apple engineers to design laptop chips, which debuted this year and are now powering AI features in Microsoft's Windows.
The technology developed by this team—known as "Oryon"—is now being incorporated into Qualcomm's mobile phone chips for the first time.
The new Snapdragon 8 Elite chip has been modified to efficiently handle tasks like generating images and text. Qualcomm plans to provide software developers with additional tools beyond those available in Alphabet's Android operating system to leverage the chip's enhanced features.
"AI is an area where we believe we have our own technology to offer to developers, even as Google moves quickly," stated Chris Patrick, Qualcomm's senior vice president and general manager for mobile handsets, in an interview with Reuters.
Qualcomm confirmed that companies such as Samsung Electronics, Asustek Computer, and Xiaomi will utilize the new chip.
