Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's minority government has lost critical backing from the New Democratic Party (NDP), which has withdrawn its automatic support in Parliament. This sudden development raises concerns about the government's stability, forcing Trudeau to seek alliances on a case-by-case basis to pass key legislation. The withdrawal increases the likelihood of an early election, despite it being originally scheduled for 2025.
The collapse of this agreement follows growing tensions between the two parties, particularly over labor issues and rising costs of living. NDP leader Jagmeet Singh has expressed dissatisfaction with Trudeau's leadership, claiming that his government is too weak to counter the Conservative Party's growing influence. Singh's decision to pull support comes at a time when Trudeau is already dealing with poor polling numbers, placing his Liberal Party significantly behind the opposition.
As a minority government, Trudeau's Liberals are left with 154 of the 338 seats in Parliament, meaning they now face challenges in passing important bills without NDP backing. Singh has hinted that his party will assess their support vote by vote, further complicating the Liberal Party's ability to govern smoothly.
While this move does not immediately trigger an election, it signals a politically unstable environment for the coming months. Trudeau must now secure new alliances or risk losing a confidence vote, which could force an early election. Analysts are watching closely to see how the political landscape will shift in the coming weeks as Trudeau navigates this new challenge.
